The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange has released a white paper with recommendations for transitioning to a new standard for acknowledgement reports after the submission of HIPAA transactions.
The Reston, Va.-based advocacy group has posted on its Web site its recommendations letter to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Hundreds of different transactions processing systems in use today process data differently, according to the white paper authors. Response reports frequently are sent to submitters in proprietary formats or on paper and frequently lack the information needed by the submitter to resolve issues with rejected electronic submissions, the authors write. With the advent of HIPAA and standard transaction sets, the ability exists to also standardize the acceptance or rejection of reports.
