Anthem’s HealthCore subsidiary offers direct access to research data to bolster life sciences
Data can help target populations for clinical trials, Tracey Quimbo says.
HealthCore, the research subsidiary of insurer Anthem, is offering direct access to its research database of longitudinal medical and pharmacy claims data available to life sciences companies via a data platform from Boston Health Economics.
The initiative launched on May 21 following an internal pilot test.
HealthCore is an analytics company that designs and conducts research for healthcare entities to assess the value of medical technologies.
The medical and pharmacy data that HealthCore is offering covers about 66 million individuals from multiple Anthem plans and Anthem’s network of physicians.

HealthCore already offers life sciences firms, insurers, providers, government organizations and academic organizations real-world evidence to support a variety of health care decisions in such areas as quality, safety and affordability. Now, HealthCore is going further with researchers, giving life sciences companies a new home for conducting analytics.
“This is the first time HealthCore is offering data directly to clients to see the data and do analytics on their own,” says Tracey Quimbo, staff vice president of data management application development.
Under the arrangement, life sciences firms can conduct their own pre-work analytics but can also have HealthCore do the analytics for them.
Further, HealthCore is offering ancillary services to help researchers, such as conducting patient or provider surveys or focus groups, adding more detailed resource use and cost of care analyses, performing clinical record review and validation, and designing and implementing observational studies and clinical trials.
Researchers can complete an online subscription to gain access to data and the platform with costs being “extremely competitive with other similar services,” says Mark Cziraky, vice president of research. Cziraky acknowledges that HealthCore previously has not been as collaborative with its data as other organizations may have been.
Anthem through HealthCore for many years has been using data to support all types of stakeholders, Cziraky adds. What is different now is that analytics and platform technologies have matured and are more user friendly. “Technology has advanced now and we did a full assessment and determined it was the right time to offer these services.”
Existing competitors to HealthCore include Optum and Truven Health, among other companies offering researchers different data sets.
