Cleveland Clinic appoints Ed Marx as its new CIO

He’s picked to lead health IT strategy, coming from leadership role at NYC Health + Hospitals.

The Cleveland Clinic has picked Edward Marx to be the healthcare organization’s new chief information officer, leading its overall health IT strategy.

Marx, who has more than 25 years of HIT experience, will assume his duties at the Cleveland Clinic effective September 1, replacing former CIO Martin Harris. Doug Smith served as interim CIO prior to Marx's recruitment.

“Ed has spent his career fostering a culture of innovation and leading teams at the forefront of healthcare information technology,” said Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD. “As CIO, he will advance the Cleveland Clinic’s ‘Patients First’ culture by providing information-enabled, data-driven technology focused on facilitating world-class patient care.”

Marx comes to the Cleveland Clinic from Advisory Board, where he served as executive vice president, providing IT leadership and strategy for NYC Health + Hospitals—the largest public healthcare system in the nation. Before that, he spent eight years as CIO at Texas Health Resources, following five years in that role at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

In addition, Marx is a fellow of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2013 CIO of the Year from HIMSS and CHIME.

“Successful healthcare IT has to ask, ‘How do we innovate to save lives?’” Marx said in a written statement. “Technology has such potential to save many, many more lives, if we can innovate and impact patient safety and the quality of care we deliver.”

The Cleveland Clinic continues its search for a new CEO. Cosgrove announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down after 13 years at the helm, but would remain on until a successor is named for him by the end of 2017.
