The Joint Commission is offering accredited hospitals real-time quality metrics year-round, along with continuous assessment of measure results to inform performance improvement.

In the past two years the Commission has sought to increase value and reduce burdens to 4,500 hospitals with a direct data submission platform for its quality measures program. Now, the platform will make quality measure results continuously available, enabling providers to measure and improve performance in near-real time without support from additional outside vendors.

The Direct Data Submission Platform will make “clinical quality language”-based electronic care quality measures available to providers in an environment where they can generate and use the results at any time. Clinical quality language brings together the underlying logic of quality measurement, clinical pathways and clinical decision support.

Other features include elimination of manual translation of measures with fewer resources required and less time spent on measures implementation.

The Joint Commission worked with platform vendor Apervita to build the cloud hosting site that underpins the new program.

“What we have accomplished in the last two years with the Direct Data Submission Platform has delivered ongoing value for our accredited hospitals,” says David Baker, MD, and executive vice president in the division of health care quality evaluation at the Joint Commission. “We’re thrilled to build on that value with continuous quality insights that empower providers to make real-time performance improvements.”
