New software helps Mercyhealth offer precision insulin therapy

Mercyhealth in Illinois and Wisconsin is adopting insulin dosing software to improve the precision of insulin therapy.

Clinicians aim to use the software to better manage hyperglycemia while reducing the risk of hypoglycemia. The focus is on improving care for patients with diabetes or stress-induced hyperglycemia.

Mercy is using a tool called EndoTool from Monarch Medical Technologies, which uses advanced algorithms to predict dosing recommendations for each patient. Using patient-specific factors that include steroid presence and kidney function, the technology reduces the time to reach target blood glucose levels and limits glycemic variability.

Partnering with Monarch will help enhance the quality and safety of care provided with improved glycemic management practices that will reduce medication errors while reducing infections and shortening length of stay, says Ruth Yarbrough, vice president at Mercyhealth.

The delivery system will integrate EndoTool into the electronic health record with integration from Monarch to enable single sign-on, bedside workflow and reduced duplicative data entry, enabling physicians to spend more time with patients.

Mercyhealth is part of Mercy Health System, a large regional delivery system serving 55 northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin communities with 8,000 employees and partners, handling 2.4 million patient visits annually.
