Chief medical information officers occupy key positions in healthcare organizations, which are now seeking to gain value from the data compiled through their electronic health records systems over the past few years. These CMIOs, or those with similar titles or job functions, are continuing to advance the cause of digital medicine as population health management and value-based care rise as key business challenges for providers. In this list, we highlight 25 of the leading voices in the CMIO community.
Andrew Gettinger, MD

Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology
Gettinger is ONC’s chief medical information officer and executive director of the Office of Clinical Quality and Safety. He’s been in the position for three years now; before that, he had nearly a 20-year run as CMIO at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Peter Greene, MD

Johns Hopkins Medicine
Greene is chief medical information officer for Johns Hopkins Medicine and associate dean for emerging technologies at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He helps JHM with strategic planning and implementation of enterprise-wide technology projects that impact clinical care. He has enterprise-wide leadership roles at Johns Hopkins in the deployment of a unified electronic health record using Epic and oversees the organization’s Data Trust initiative to support data governance and analytics.
C. William Hanson III, MD

In addition to his CMIO role at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Hanson is also a professor of anesthesiology, surgery and internal medicine, as well as professor of computer and information science in the school of engineering and applied science at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Maia Hightower, MD

Hightower has been in the CMIO role for about two years at University of Iowa Health Care. There, she’s leading EMR upgrades, optimization and support, including development of a physician informatics officer team to provide peer support to clinicians to increase EMR proficiency and adoption. Before UIHC, she worked as associate medical director at Stanford Health Care, University HealthCare Alliance.
Michael Hodgkins, MD

Hodgkins, MD, is trained in internal medicine, and as a technologist, he had spent 25 years working in healthcare information technology, much of it with startups focused on information sharing. Now, as CMIO for the AMA the past seven years, he is deeply involved in health information technology (HIT) initiatives to ensure that physicians’ needs are met.
Allen Hsiao, MD

Hsiao has filled the CMIO role for the health system for the past three years, building off previous experience there as CMIO for Yale-New Haven Hospital from 2006 to 2012.
Stanley Huff, MD

In addition to his chief medical informatics officer role at Intermountain, Huff is a professor in biomedical informatics at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. He is a leading voice in interoperability, serving in several organizations pursuing information exchange standardization and on federal panels on HIT.
Michael Hunt, DO

St. Vincent’s Health Partners
Hunt is the CEO and president, and chief population health officer, at St. Vincent’s Health Partners, a Bridgeport, Conn.-based physician-hospital organization with more than 275 local primary care and specialist physicians. He’s also filled the CMIO role there and is considered to be a thought leader in the industry.
David Kaelber, MD

MetroHealth
Kaelber has filled the CMIO role at MetroHealth, the first public health system in the country to install an Epic electronic health record; it went live with the system in 1999 and was fully deployed enterprise-wide in 2009 throughout all ambulatory clinics, inpatient areas, and the ED. Most recently, the system was named a 2015 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award recipient. Kaelber has helped with the implementation of seven different EHR-enabled interventions that have led to improved outcomes.
Donald Levick, MD

Lehigh Valley Health Network
Levick is a practicing pediatrician at Lehigh Valley Health Network. He has worked in clinical informatics since 2000 and has worked on many HIT projects, serving as one of the executive clinical leaders for the implementation of Epic, the system’s integrated electronic health record.

For nearly seven years, Margolis has served in the CMIO role for Adventist Health, a multi-hospital system based out of Roseville, Calif. Before that, he served in the same role at seven-hospital Orlando Health, where he was responsible for defining and executing clinical information strategy together with CIO and physician leadership.
Jeana O'Brien, MD

Baylor Scott & White Healthcare
O’Brien has been the CMIO for the massive system, which was formed through the merger of Baylor Healthcare and Scott & White Clinics. She came to the role from being CMIO at As CMIO for Scott & White from 2009 to 2015; there she served as physician lead for the Epic implementation, which took place from mid-2013 to late 2014; that effort included enterprise Epic modules for financials and clinicals, inpatient and ambulatory across the system.
Jacques Orces, MD

Orces has been busy at Miami Children’s. In addition to serving as its CMIO over the past five years, he’s also been actively involved in leading the facility’s aggressive telemedicine program, which uses a variety of ground-breaking technologies to treat pediatric cases all over the world.

Patty oversees all clinical and revenue cycle applications at Rush University Medical Center. Previously, he was executive lead and CMIO for the switch from multiple best of breed EHRs to Epic across four hospitals and 19 clinics in the HealthEast Care System. He headed the informatics department at HealthEast, which is responsible for implementing and optimizing HealthEast's Epic EHR.

Robicsek is filling the role of chief medical analytics officer new to his job at Providence Health & Services. Previously, he was associate chief medical information officer at NorthShore University HealthSystem, also filling the role of vice president of clinical analytics for NorthShore.

In addition to his CMIO role, Saldana is medical director for clinical decision support for Texas Health Resources, widely recognized for its use of health information technology. He is involved nationally in EHR and clinical decision support initiatives.

Before being named as CHIO, Showalter served as the organization’s CMIO. Showalter led work to adopt clinical predictive analytics that churn through standardized and dirty EHR data to provide real-time predictions on heart attack risks for UMMC’s patient population.

Stanley moved to the CMIO role at UConn Health after serving as the CMIO officer at Cooley Dickenson Hospital. There, he was responsible for many aspects of EMR implementation, including meaningful use compliance, CPOE, workflow analysis and development, design of order sets, protocols and policies, clinical documentation, physician training, clinical project management, clinical decision support and data analytics.

Steinberg is also vice president for population health informatics at Christiana Care Health System. In working with population health information, she is focused on implementing innovative technology architecture platforms to support care delivery within the framework of new payment models.
Carol Steltenkamp, MD

Steltenkamp has influence far beyond her position in her Kentucky health system. She is also chair of HIMSS’ board of directors. A practicing pediatrician, Steltenkamp is an instrumental leader in the advancement of Health Information Technology throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond. As the CMIO of UK HealthCare, she is responsible for the leadership and management of all clinical information systems.

Sunshine has been at Cleveland-based University Hospitals since 2009. He is also vice chairman of the department of radiology at UH Case Medical Center.

Velasco now serves as Texas Health Resources’ CHIO after filling the role of its CMIO for 10 years. He is widely respected for his ability to interact with peers, and blend outcomes research and medical informatics.

In addition to serving as MUSC’s CMIO, Warren is a professor in the College of Medicine. There, he has an academic focus of optimizing utilization of IT to improve healthcare and advance medical education and research.

Willett has served in the CMIO role for five years, and before that, served as assistant dean for clinical service metrics for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
