Canadian hospital, vendor collaborate on ‘head-only’ MRI

Synaptive Medical is developing a magnetic resonance imaging system that aims to provide the imaging technology directly at the point of care.

The Nova Scotia Halifax Authority is collaborating on the project to develop the head-only MRI—called Evry—with Synaptive Medical, a designer of surgical planning and navigation technologies. The technology will be worked on and tested at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The new MRI is intended to be used for imaging patients in situations that require immediate decision-making, such as with an acute stroke. The MRI also can be placed in areas previously inaccessible to MRI installation, including a hospital room, which could improve outcomes.

“MRI technology will be accessible directly at a patient’s point of care within an emergency department and other areas of the hospital, giving doctors vital and possibly live-saving information when and where they need it,” says Peter Wehrly, CEO at Synaptive Medical. “We are excited to partner with the Nova Scotia Health Authority to study the impact it will have by lowering the barrier to receiving an appropriate MRI.”

Evry includes a superconducting magnet, powerful gradients and a custom head coil, enabling the device to be sited in areas with little available space, such as emergency departments, intensive care units and other areas.

“When someone has a stroke, a couple minutes can mean the difference between maintaining brain functions and losing them,” says Steven Beyea, a scientific director at the Nova Scotia Health Authority. “By bringing MRI directly to the point of care, Synaptive and NSHA will research the impact to patients, clinicians and the healthcare system more broadly, providing physicians with faster and more efficient access to MRI.”

For now, Synaptive will seek regulatory approval and early adopters with the first completion of installation at QEII expected this fall.
