University of Rochester Medicine works to validate AI use in radiology

Two vendor organizations and a provider organization are among the first to use a radiology industry group’s approach to test the performance of AI solutions.
The testing program, started by the American College of Radiology, is its DSI-ASSESS-AI registry. It aims to test the use of artificial intelligence in providing clinical care.
The program is being used by Aidoc, a provider of AI solutions for radiologists, which is being used at the University of Rochester Medicine. The Aidoc solution is integrated with Nuance’s PowerScribe Workflow Orchestration platform, which delivers AI-powered workflow efficiency and accuracy to radiology practice.
The program is testing an always-on solution for automatically flagging and prioritizing critical CT cases currently being used at University of Rochester. The companies say the combined Aidoc-Nuance solution enables radiologists to better capture value from AI.

"With Aidoc and Nuance together, patients with critical pathologies are prioritized in the radiologist's worklist, accelerating time to patient diagnosis and treatment," says David L. Waldman, MD, chair of imaging sciences at the University of Rochester Medical Center
ACR says the testing framework offers an industry-first post-market surveillance and continuous validation of the AI solution's performance and impact in real clinical settings. This enables health systems to identify the right solution for improving patient care in their clinical setting.
"Our goal in the ACR DSI is to provide clarity on the emerging junction of AI and real clinical care," said Bibb Allen Jr., MD, chief medical officer of the ACR DSI. "Our work with Aidoc and Nuance has demonstrated, for the first time, the ability to close the loop of AI validation, solving one of the burning challenges of the current ecosystem."
