Why interoperability is entering the boardroom
Organizations are increasingly recognizing that their ability to innovate depends on their ability to move data effectively.

For years, interoperability was viewed as an IT initiative. It was important, certainly, but largely confined to technical teams, integration projects and compliance requirements. Success was measured by interfaces built, APIs implemented or regulatory obligations fulfilled.
That era is ending.
Today, data exchange sits at the center of nearly every strategic priority in healthcare, from artificial intelligence and digital transformation to patient experience, administrative simplification, remote care, connected medical devices and entirely new models of care delivery.
As a result, interoperability is no longer merely a technical capability. It is increasingly becoming a strategic enabler that shapes what kind of healthcare organization an enterprise can become.
A visioning experiment
One exercise I often conduct with boards is to ask leaders to set technology aside and imagine the healthcare system they hope to deliver 10 or 15 years from now. The answers are remarkably consistent.
They envision more care delivered in the home. They describe connected devices and real-time monitoring that enable older adults to remain independent longer. They imagine proactive interventions instead of reactive treatment, AI-supported decision making, seamless patient experiences and personalized care journeys that extend beyond traditional healthcare settings.
Then they have this realization. None of those futures are possible without interoperability. The ability to exchange, govern and trust data is becoming the foundational capability that enables healthcare transformation.
This is why interoperability is no longer an IT discussion. It is increasingly a strategic one.
From mere compliance to competitive advantage
For much of the last decade, interoperability was often approached as a compliance exercise. Organizations implemented data exchange capabilities because regulations required it or because integration was necessary to support existing operations.
Today, the business case has fundamentally changed. Recent regulatory initiatives, growing expectations around patient access and industry efforts to modernize data exchange are accelerating investment in interoperability. At the same time, organizations are increasingly recognizing that their ability to innovate depends on their ability to move data effectively.
The conversation is shifting from: "How do we comply?" to "What opportunities are possible if we do this well?"
Organizations that establish trusted, interoperable data ecosystems will likely be better positioned to deploy AI responsibly, support distributed care models, improve patient experiences, reduce administrative burden and participate in increasingly connected healthcare ecosystems.

The organizations that view it solely as infrastructure may satisfy regulatory requirements. Those that view it as a strategic capability may define the future of healthcare delivery.
AI has changed the economics of interoperability
Interoperability investments often struggled to demonstrate immediate business value. While data exchange was widely recognized as important, it was not always viewed as strategically differentiating.
AI has changed that equation. Healthcare organizations are increasingly realizing that AI success depends on trusted, accessible and exchangeable data. The most sophisticated algorithms cannot overcome fragmented information, inconsistent data quality or poorly governed environments.
In many ways, AI did not create healthcare's interoperability challenge; it simply exposed how strategically important interoperability has become.
The organizations that realize the greatest value from AI will likely be those that have already built environments where data can move, be trusted and be acted upon across the enterprise.
The CIO's strategic opportunity
This creates an important opportunity for CIOs and digital leaders.
While interoperability discussions of the past often focused on technical implementation details, CIOs now increasingly find themselves facilitating enterprise conversations about future care models, governance, investment priorities and organizational strategy.
Interoperability no longer can be discussed solely through the lens of APIs, standards or integration projects. It should be discussed in terms of business outcomes.
These can include questions such as, what kind of patient experience does the organization want to deliver? How will care increasingly move into homes and communities? What role will AI play in future operations? How will organizations collaborate across increasingly connected ecosystems?
Each of these questions is fundamentally an interoperability question.
The next phase of interoperability will require much more than technology. It will require governance structures that define accountability and trust. It will require implementation expertise, organizational alignment and leadership teams that understand the strategic implications of connected data ecosystems.
Most importantly, it will require boards and executive teams to recognize interoperability for what it has become -- not simply an IT initiative, but a foundational enabler of healthcare's future.
Healthcare has spent decades discussing interoperability as a technical aspiration. The next decade may define it differently: as the strategic capability that determines an organization's ability to innovate, collaborate and compete.
Interoperability has entered the boardroom because it increasingly determines what healthcare can become. The question for leaders is no longer whether interoperability matters. The question is what kind of healthcare organization they hope to become, and whether they are building the data foundations necessary to get there.
